Sterling Silver and Silver Plate are highly resistant to corrosion but items can become tarnished by sulphides which are to some extent always present in the atmosphere. Tarnish is a superficial film of silver sulphide which is initially a light gold colour, in time this can develop into a blue / black discolouration.
To avoid tarnish from food and liquids, we would recommend rinsing off any debris as soon as convenient.
We would always advocate washing items by hand in hot soapy water and immediately drying the pieces with a soft tea towel.
Holloware items (generic terms for items of household silver other than flatware) should not be cleaned in a dishwasher. To maintain holloware we would recommend occasionally cleaning it with a good quality silver polish and silver cloth (Goddard’s is a reputable brand).
Holloware is best preserved in anti-tarnish bags and stored in a room which is not humid or an extreme of temperature.
Be careful with silver plated items as excessive polishing can wear down the silver revealing the base metal.
